Mott Haven occupies the southwestern corner of the Bronx between the Harlem River and the Major Deegan Expressway, a neighborhood experiencing rapid development along its waterfront while maintaining a strong residential core inland. The Harlem River waterfront has been transformed with new apartment buildings, and Randalls Island — accessible via the Randalls Island Connector pedestrian bridge from 132nd Street — provides over 400 acres of athletic fields, paths, and open green space where dogs are welcome on-leash. Mill Pond Park along the waterfront has a fenced dog run with river views.

The residential streets along Alexander Avenue, Willis Avenue, and the blocks around St. Mary's Park are lined with prewar apartment buildings and row houses.
