Pet Care in Provo

Provo is the county seat of Utah County and home to Brigham Young University, which shapes nearly every aspect of life in this city of roughly 115,000 people. The BYU campus dominates the eastern side of town, and the student population — around 35,000 — cycles through apartments and rental homes that fill the neighborhoods between University Avenue and the Wasatch foothills. Many of these students have dogs, and the transient nature of student life creates a constant demand for flexible pet care. A student heading home for the summer or leaving for a study abroad program needs a sitter. A couple juggling classes and part-time work at the Riverwoods shopping center needs a midday walker.

The Wasatch Mountains rise directly east of Provo, and the outdoor access is exceptional. Rock Canyon Park sits at the mouth of Rock Canyon and has a popular off-leash dog area surrounded by scrub oak and views of Utah Valley. The Y Mountain Trail switchbacks up to the iconic BYU "Y" painted on the hillside, though it is steep enough that not all dogs can handle it. The Provo River Parkway Trail is the valley's premier paved path, running over 15 miles along the Provo River from Provo Canyon through town and south toward Springville. Utah Lake State Park on the west side offers flat, open walks along the lakeshore, though shade is scarce.

Provo's climate mirrors Orem's but the canyon proximity adds its own wrinkles. Cold air drains down the canyons on winter nights, and the inversion layer settles over Utah Valley for weeks between December and February. Air quality during inversions is routinely among the worst in the nation. Summer brings dry heat that pushes past 100 degrees during peak weeks, and the exposed sidewalks along State Street and University Avenue become dangerously hot for paw pads by late morning.

The LDS community culture in Provo means large families are common, and many households have stay-at-home parents — but that does not eliminate the need for dog walkers. Church callings, volunteer commitments, and the sheer logistics of managing five or six children mean pets can still get shortchanged on exercise. For both students and families, a local walker who knows the canyon trails, understands inversion timing, and can work around class or church schedules fills a real gap. HeyDog connects Provo pet owners with nearby walkers, sitters, and boarders at zero platform fees. Providers set their own rates and keep everything they earn.
