Chestnut Hill is Philadelphia's northwesternmost neighborhood and feels more like a charming small town than part of a major city. Germantown Avenue, the main commercial thoroughfare, is lined with independent shops, cafes, and restaurants, many of which put out water bowls for passing dogs and welcome them on outdoor patios. The neighborhood's housing stock is predominantly large single-family homes and estates set on generous lots with mature trees and spacious yards, a stark contrast to the dense rowhouse blocks that define most of Philadelphia. For dog owners, this means many residents have private outdoor space, but the real draw is the access to nature. Wissahickon Valley Park borders Chestnut Hill to the south and west, providing over 50 miles of trails through old-growth forest, along Wissahickon Creek, and over historic stone bridges. Forbidden Drive, the main trail through the Wissahickon, is a car-free gravel path that is widely considered the most popular dog walking trail in Philadelphia. Morris Arboretum, the official arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania, sits at the northern end of the neighborhood with 92 acres of gardens and paths, though dog policies should be confirmed before visiting. SEPTA Regional Rail's Chestnut Hill West and Chestnut Hill East lines both terminate in the neighborhood, providing two separate rail connections to Center City.
