Pet Care in NoHo
NoHo — North of Houston Street — is a compact neighborhood roughly bounded by Houston Street, 8th Street, Broadway, and the Bowery, occupying just a few blocks of prime lower Manhattan real estate. Despite its small footprint, NoHo has a distinct character: 19th-century loft buildings now converted to luxury residences, cobblestone streets like Bond Street and Great Jones Street that recall the neighborhood's industrial past, and a gallery and restaurant scene that draws visitors but maintains a residential core. For dog owners, the neighborhood's primary challenge is the same as SoHo's — limited green space.
The Mercer-Houston Dog Run at the corner of Mercer and Houston streets is the closest dedicated off-leash area, sitting right on the southern border of NoHo. Washington Square Park's dog run in Greenwich Village is a short walk west, and Tompkins Square Park's legendary dog run in the East Village is accessible heading east. Within NoHo itself, walking routes are best on the cobblestone side streets — Bond Street, Great Jones Street, and Bleecker between Broadway and the Bowery — which carry less foot traffic than the main avenues and have a distinctive atmosphere.
The B, D, F, M at Broadway-Lafayette and the 6 at Bleecker Street put NoHo at a major subway intersection. The neighborhood's loft apartments tend to be spacious, a significant advantage for dog owners in a city where square footage is scarce. Broadway and Lafayette Street carry heavy traffic and pedestrians, requiring alert leash handling, while the side streets one block in are comparatively peaceful. Pet services are available in the surrounding neighborhoods — the Union Square area to the north and the East Village to the east both have concentrations of vet clinics, pet stores, and groomers.
