Pet Care in Crown Heights
Crown Heights is a large neighborhood stretching east from Washington Avenue to Ralph Avenue, split roughly in two by Eastern Parkway — a grand, tree-lined boulevard originally designed by Olmsted and Vaux. The parkway's wide planted medians provide a natural on-leash walking corridor that runs the length of the neighborhood, connecting to Prospect Park at the western end and Brower Park further east. Brower Park at Brooklyn Avenue has a fenced dog run that serves the eastern portion of the neighborhood, while residents on the western side gravitate to Prospect Park's off-leash areas.
The housing stock is a mix of brownstones and limestone row houses on the side streets, with larger apartment buildings along the avenues. The brownstone blocks between Sterling Place and St. Johns Place are among the most attractive in the neighborhood, with mature trees and well-maintained stoops. Franklin Avenue has emerged as the main dining and nightlife corridor on the western side, with coffee shops, restaurants, and a growing number of pet-related businesses. Nostrand Avenue serves as the main commercial artery further east.
The 2, 3, 4, 5 trains run along Eastern Parkway with stops at Franklin Avenue, Nostrand Avenue, and Kingston Avenue, providing good subway coverage. The neighborhood is large enough that walking conditions vary significantly — the western blocks near Prospect Park feel similar to Park Slope, while the eastern stretches are more commercial and less shaded. Dog walking rates are generally lower than in western Brooklyn waterfront neighborhoods. Summers require shade-seeking routes on the interior blocks, while the Eastern Parkway medians and Prospect Park provide relief.
