Pet Care in Morristown

Morristown is the county seat of Morris County and the de facto downtown of one of New Jersey's most affluent suburban counties. Known as the "military capital of the American Revolution" for hosting George Washington's army during two critical winters, the town has preserved much of its historical character while evolving into a walkable urban center with a thriving restaurant scene along South Street, the Green, and the surrounding blocks. For dog owners, Morristown offers a rare combination in suburban New Jersey — a true walking town with a compact center, extensive parkland, and a community that treats dogs as full participants in public life.

The Morristown Green, the historic square at the center of town, is surrounded by shops and restaurants and serves as a gathering point for dog owners strolling through the downtown. Burnham Park, adjacent to the Green, provides walking paths around a pond, shade trees, and connections to the Speedwell Avenue corridor. But the real draw for dog owners is the Morristown National Historical Park — a unit of the National Park Service that includes Jockey Hollow and the Fort Nonsense trail system. Jockey Hollow alone encompasses over 1,300 acres of rolling woodland with miles of trails through forests, meadows, and along streams where the Continental Army once camped. Dogs on leash are welcome throughout the park.

Lewis Morris County Park, just south of Morristown, adds another 2,000+ acres of county parkland with trails, a disc golf course, and Sunrise Lake. The park features a dedicated dog park area and trails that range from paved paths to rugged woodland routes. Loantaka Brook Reservation, a county park to the south, offers flat, paved multi-use trails through a meadow and woodland corridor that are popular with dog walkers who prefer easier terrain.

Morristown's NJ Transit station on the Morris and Essex line provides direct service to Penn Station in Manhattan, making it a major commuter town. The professional workforce drives demand for weekday dog walking, and the town's walkable center means many residents can live without relying heavily on cars. Morris County's climate is slightly cooler than the coastal areas, with more reliable snowfall in winter — Jockey Hollow and Lewis Morris Park can be excellent for winter trail walking when conditions are manageable, but ice on the steeper trails requires caution. Summer humidity is typical of inland New Jersey, though the elevation and tree cover at Jockey Hollow make trail walking significantly more comfortable than pavement-based routes.
