Pet Care in Lowell

Lowell sits at the confluence of the Merrimack and Concord Rivers in northeastern Massachusetts, about 30 miles northwest of Boston. With roughly 115,000 residents, it is a mid-sized city with deep industrial roots — the power canal system built in the 19th century to drive textile mills is now a National Historical Park, and the repurposed mill buildings that line the canals have become the city's architectural signature. Lowell's population is one of the most diverse in Massachusetts, with large Cambodian, Latino, and African communities that give the city a character unlike the homogeneous suburbs surrounding it.

The canal system and the rivers that feed it create Lowell's most distinctive walking infrastructure. The Canalway Trail follows the historic power canals through the city center, providing a flat, paved path that connects the National Historical Park, downtown, and several neighborhoods. Dogs on leash are welcome on the trail, which passes restored mill buildings, canal locks, and green spaces along the waterway. The Riverwalk along the Merrimack River provides additional waterfront walking with views of the river and Pawtucket Falls.

Shedd Park, in the Belvidere neighborhood on the south side, is the most popular neighborhood park for dog walking, with a fenced off-leash dog area, open lawns, and walking paths. South Common in the Highlands neighborhood has open green space and a walking loop. The Bruce Freeman Rail Trail, a rails-to-trails project, passes through the western edge of the city and provides a paved, car-free path extending south toward Chelmsford and beyond — it is popular with dog walkers who want longer, uninterrupted walks.

Lowell's climate follows the pattern of inland northeastern Massachusetts — colder winters and warmer summers than the coast. The Merrimack Valley can trap cold air during winter inversions, making Lowell noticeably colder than Boston on still winter nights. Snowfall is moderate to heavy, and the city's older sidewalks and narrow streets in the downtown core can become challenging to navigate after storms. Summers bring warm, humid conditions with temperatures in the 80s and occasional days in the 90s. The fall foliage season, from late September through October, makes walking along the canals and river particularly scenic. HeyDog connects Lowell pet owners with nearby walkers, sitters, and boarders at zero platform fees. Providers set their own rates and keep everything they earn.
