Pet Care in Bear

Bear is an unincorporated community in central New Castle County, spread along the Route 40 and Route 7 corridors south of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. With roughly 21,000 residents, Bear is one of Delaware's larger suburban communities, though it lacks a traditional town center -- the community is organized around shopping plazas, housing developments, and the major roads that connect Wilmington to the north with Middletown and Dover to the south. Despite this suburban sprawl pattern, Bear is anchored by one of Delaware's finest state parks.

Lums Pond State Park is the highlight for dog owners in Bear. The park surrounds the state's largest freshwater pond, a 200-acre body of water created by damming the St. Georges Creek. Over 10 miles of trails loop through the park's 1,790 acres of forest, meadow, and pond-side terrain. The main trail circles the pond with varied surfaces -- packed dirt, gravel, and boardwalk sections through wetlands -- creating a walking route that takes two to three hours at a comfortable pace. The park includes a designated off-leash dog area with fenced space for dogs to run, making it one of the most complete dog walking destinations in Delaware. The Go Ape zip-line course in the forest canopy and a seasonal campground add to the park's draw, though the trails remain the primary attraction for dog walkers.

Outside Lums Pond, the Bear community relies on neighborhood parks and greenway paths for daily walking. Glasgow Park, a New Castle County facility, provides athletic fields, a playground, and a paved walking loop. The C&D Canal Trail follows the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal through the northern edge of the Bear area, providing flat walking along the towpath with views of ships transiting between the Delaware River and the Chesapeake Bay. The trail extends for several miles and is popular with both walkers and cyclists.

Bear's pet care market is driven by suburban family demographics. The housing developments are full of young families with dogs, and the commute to Wilmington can take 20 to 30 minutes, creating standard weekday demand for midday walks. Dog walking rates are moderate, falling in the lower range for New Castle County. The flat terrain makes walking easy for dogs of all ages, and Lums Pond's size means walkers who specialize in trail walks can provide a service that feels like a genuine outdoor adventure rather than a neighborhood loop.
